Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is a public university in Tanzania so far the only one in the country that teaches agriculture and nutrition. It has a long experience of conducting research and outreach programmes with local communities. As one of its key departments, the Department of Food Science and Technology is involved in efforts to fight malnutrition and other food related problems (including poverty) in the country. With its expertise in nutrition and food science, researchers from this department have taken the lead in many nutrition activities to support the communities. The other key department is the Department of Crop Science and Production, which consists of Horticulture Unit, with vast experience in vegetables and tropical crops. The department has been involved in various research and outreach projects to support farmers to improve their incomes and food security.
